New U.S. Visa Application Rules
Виза в США в Казахстане (Астана)

Russian citizens apply for U.S. visas in Kazakhstan through the U.S. Embassy in Astana, with a mandatory in-person interview. In 2026, Kazakhstan is the main country for Russian applicants because applications are not accepted in Russia. Obtaining a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan involves completing the DS‑160 form, paying the visa application fee and booking an interview in Astana. Interviews are booked online, and the decision is made following a conversation with a visa officer. Below, you will find information about the application procedure, timing and specific features of applying for a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan.

Russians apply for U.S. visas outside the country because the U.S. Embassy in Russia does not accept applicants. Applicants from Russia primarily consider nearby countries. Russian-speaking officers also matter, as a language barrier can lead to refusal. In 2026, Russians very often choose Kazakhstan for their U.S. visa applications. It is the most popular destination among Russian citizens. Interview slots appear frequently, and officers conduct interviews in Russian. The refusal rate for Russian citizens is relatively low, provided that the applicant’s circumstances are clear and transparent to the officer. Officers here understand life in Russia, without prejudice or political bias. Below, we explain important aspects of applying for a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan.

U.S. Visa Application Procedure in Kazakhstan

Since 6 September 2025, Russian citizens have been able to apply for U.S. visas at only two U.S. embassies, in Poland and Kazakhstan. These changes were adopted by the Department of State for all applicants from Russia, without exception. However, attending an interview in Poland requires a Schengen visa to enter Europe. Not everyone can obtain one quickly, and travelling to Warsaw involves significant expenses. Compared with Poland, Kazakhstan is a more accessible and affordable option for many Russians. Most Russian applicants therefore choose Astana in 2026 for tourist, visitor, business and student U.S. visas.

Kazakhstan has two U.S. diplomatic missions: the Embassy in Astana and the Consulate in Almaty. However, Russian citizens are seen only in Astana. Since 6 September 2025, the U.S. Consulate in Almaty has not conducted interviews for Russian citizens. It is still sometimes possible to book there because the system may allow such appointments. However, obtaining a visa in Almaty will not be possible: the interview will be cancelled, or the visa refused with instructions to apply at the U.S. Embassy in Astana. In that case, you will need to complete another DS‑160, prepare documents and pay the visa application fee again. Choose the correct location, Astana, from the outset to save time and money.

Points to Consider When Applying for a U.S. Visa in Astana

  • Russian citizens may attend interviews only at the U.S. Embassy in Astana or Warsaw;
  • the U.S. Consulate in Almaty does not accept Russian applicants, and such appointments are cancelled;
  • the DS‑160 must be completed specifically for Astana, otherwise the system will not allow the booking;
  • visa application fees paid in other countries cannot be used to book in Kazakhstan;
  • separate dates are released for residents and nonresidents, so you must select the nonresident option;
  • the DS‑160 confirmation and appointment confirmation must be printed and brought to the interview.

Despite the changes to interview locations, the U.S. visa application procedure in Kazakhstan remains the same in 2026. You need to complete the DS‑160 form, register a profile at ais.usvisa-info.com, pay the visa application fee and book a U.S. visa appointment in Kazakhstan through your account. Please note: you must answer the profile questions about Kazakhstan citizenship and residence permits carefully. Separate dates are released for residents and nonresidents. Nonresidents are prohibited from booking interviews as permanent residents of Kazakhstan.

Applicants must bring a complete document package to the interview. This includes a valid international passport, previous passports containing visas and travel stamps, the DS‑160 confirmation and the appointment confirmation. It is also advisable to bring documents supporting the purpose of travel and demonstrating strong ties to Russia, such as an invitation, an approximate itinerary, an employment letter, marriage and children’s birth certificates, and other evidence. It is generally believed that documents are not examined during the interview and that the conversation receives most attention. Nevertheless, it is better to have all necessary supporting documents with you in case the officer wishes to clarify any information.

Another point about applying for a U.S. visa in Astana in 2026: visa application fees paid in Georgia, Poland, Armenia or other countries are not valid in Kazakhstan. You can book an interview in Astana only with a fee paid for Kazakhstan through your account. The payment may be made either by the applicant or by any third party. A payment receipt is not required for booking because all payment information is recorded in the system.

In 2026, the U.S. visa application fee in Kazakhstan is paid online through your account on the official visa application portal. If several people apply through one account, the system automatically calculates the total fee, which is paid in a single transaction. You do not need to be physically present in Kazakhstan to make the payment. However, only bank cards issued outside Russia are accepted. Russian bank cards cannot be used. If you encounter difficulties, your friends or relatives can make the payment. Our company can also assist. Contact our staff for current prices and payment procedures. We will be happy to help you pay your U.S. visa application fee for Kazakhstan.

Examples of Our Clients' U.S. Embassy Appointments in Astana

Booking an interview remains one of the most difficult stages of applying for a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan: available slots appear irregularly and disappear quickly. Applicants therefore need to see not only a description of the service but also its actual results. Below are anonymised confirmations of real appointments booked for our clients in the official U.S. Embassy Astana system. They show the scheduled interview date and time, visa category, location and other information that allows the booking result to be checked independently.

The gallery shows individual examples, while overall activity can be assessed using data updated as new appointments are booked. The confirmed appointments table below lists the latest 25 bookings made by our bot, including when an available slot was detected, the interview date and links to available confirmations. The data shows that clients are booked regularly and that released slots are reserved for different applicants, helping you assess the actual volume of work completed recently.

The confirmations above show real B1/B2 interview appointments booked for our clients by the bot at the U.S. Embassy in Astana. The automated system checks the calendar around the clock and reserves suitable slots as soon as they appear, respecting agreed restrictions and date preferences. As of August 2026, the bot remains the fastest and most effective way to book a B1/B2 interview in Astana. However, it works only with slots released in the official calendar, so an exact date or booking timeframe cannot be guaranteed in advance. This page explains activation terms, prices and answers to common questions. To activate the bot, email bot@gofortravel.ru. We will answer your questions and help select suitable search settings. Payment is required only after an appointment is actually reserved in your account.

U.S. Visa Application and Processing Times in Kazakhstan

After the Department of State adopted new U.S. visa application rules, the booking situation in Kazakhstan changed. Since 6 September 2025, Russian citizens have been able to apply for U.S. visas only through Warsaw and Astana, whereas previously appointments were available at almost all U.S. embassies worldwide. Applicant traffic has been redistributed, with the main workload falling on the U.S. Embassy in Astana. It is the most accessible option for Russian citizens, so most apply for their U.S. visas through Kazakhstan in 2026.

Applicant numbers in Astana have increased considerably, while the consular section’s staffing has remained unchanged. Interview capacity is severely limited. Slots appear irregularly and are taken immediately. Independent booking for U.S. visas in Kazakhstan is becoming increasingly difficult because of intense competition. Applicants must constantly check the calendar for an opening, and even this provides no guarantee. Manually arranging a U.S. Embassy interview in Astana for a near-term date is now almost impossible, directly affecting the time required to obtain a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan.

The only effective solution for booking a U.S. visa appointment in Kazakhstan is the bot. This automated tool books interviews at the U.S. Embassy in Astana. It monitors the Embassy calendar around the clock and immediately reserves available slots for our clients, taking all preferences and restrictions into account. Applicants using the bot do not need to search for appointments independently or continually check the calendar. The U.S. visa bot in Kazakhstan books applicants quickly on suitable dates, reducing interview waiting time. The service is paid for only after an interview has been booked.

Requirements for U.S. Visa Applicants in Astana

No official applicant requirements are published for U.S. visas through the U.S. Embassy in Astana. The consular section follows internal instructions that are never disclosed. Applicants are assessed as a whole: officers examine ties to their country of residence, employment, income and family status, and clarify the purpose of travel to the United States. These factors help officers decide B1/B2 visa applications. Please also note that the applicant’s behaviour during the interview plays an important role. Overly emotional, confused or suspicious reactions can lead to additional questions.

According to our clients’ feedback, the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan pays particular attention to applicants’ finances. To obtain a U.S. tourist visa B1/B2 in Astana, applicants need to demonstrate stability, the ability to pay for the trip and their intention to return home. Officers also check previous international travel: whether there have been immigration violations, how long applicants usually stay abroad, and whether they return to Russia on time. The DS‑160 must contain no mistakes or typing errors and must be completed according to the rules and accepted transliteration standards. A correctly completed form and a full document package improve the chances of U.S. visa approval in Kazakhstan.

Preparing for the visa interview in Astana is also essential. Think through your answers to possible officer questions: they should be clear, understandable and logical. Remember that you will have only a few minutes to make the right impression. Your answers must not contradict the DS‑160, and you should avoid doubt or uncertainty. Even slight suspicions that an applicant is concealing something can lead to a B1/B2 refusal.

Applicants are therefore assessed comprehensively, down to the smallest details. Although no official requirements for obtaining a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan are published, we outline several criteria that usually influence the decision. Based on many years of handling U.S. visa applications through Astana and our clients’ feedback, we have prepared a list of requirements for Russians at the U.S. Embassy in Astana in 2025. It will help you understand the situation, assess your prospects realistically and avoid mistakes when preparing your U.S. visa application.

The Travel Purpose Must Match the Visa Category

Choosing the correct U.S. visa category is important. Your travel purpose must be clearly stated and supported by documents. A B1/B2 visa does not permit employment, long-term study or permanent residence in the United States; it is a nonimmigrant category. B1 covers short business trips, partner meetings, conferences, signing contracts and non-intensive study of up to 18 hours per week. B2 is used for tourism, visiting family or friends, cultural events and medical treatment.

A Logical U.S. Travel Itinerary

Applicants must clearly state their purpose of travel and explain exactly what they intend to do. Plans should not be vague, change frequently or involve an excessively long stay. You need to demonstrate that your intentions match the visa category, stated travel purpose and financial means. For tourism, for example, it is better to choose a popular destination and a normal holiday length. Travel costs should be proportionate to income. For business travel, prepare evidence such as a partner invitation or event registration. Your plans must be transparent; otherwise, the officer may conclude that you are concealing your true intentions and refuse the visa.

A Temporary Stay in the United States

B1/B2 visas are issued for visits, not permanent residence. Russian citizens are granted a period of stay of up to 180 days, after which they must leave the United States. At the U.S. Embassy interview in Astana, clearly explain your plans and trip duration. The officer will ask why you are travelling, what you will do and how long you will stay. Demonstrate ties to Russia, such as employment, family, property and social commitments, and that you will return home. Applicants suspected of immigration intentions are refused. The main task is to show that the trip is temporary and not intended as a move.

Evidence of Strong Ties to Russia

This is a key factor for every applicant. Insufficient ties to the home country are the most frequent reason for a U.S. visa refusal. The consular officer must be confident that your situation is stable, your life is rooted in Russia and the U.S. trip is a short visit for a specific purpose. Ties can be demonstrated through permanent employment, income, family and minor children. Students provide confirmation of enrolment at a Russian educational institution. For pensioners, property and close relatives in Russia are advantages. The stronger the ties, the greater the chance of approval. Highly mobile applicants with nothing keeping them at home may be refused under Section 214(b) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act.

The Applicant's Financial Means

A bank statement is not required for B1/B2; an employment letter is sufficient. However, the U.S. Embassy in Astana does not rely solely on the figures in letters. Officers understand that an employer letter can state any income amount. They therefore compare all factors: position, length of service, professional experience, family status, business ownership and property. They also assess whether the trip matches the applicant's financial means. Can the applicant cover the costs, or is the trip too expensive? Everything must appear logical and justified, without unclear or suspicious details.

Visa History and International Travel

Frequent international travel is a major advantage when applying for a U.S. visa. Travel to Europe, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea and other countries with demanding visa requirements is particularly valuable. Regular travel, compliance with immigration laws and timely returns home indicate reliability and trustworthiness to the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan. Previous U.S. visas are also an advantage, especially if trips involved no violations or fines. A passport with no travel history is not an automatic reason for refusal, but obtaining a U.S. visa is much harder in that case. All other factors need to be impeccable.

Correct Documents and DS‑160 Application

Applicants must bring a valid passport, previous passports containing visas or travel stamps, the DS‑160 confirmation, appointment confirmation and a photograph to the U.S. Embassy interview in Astana, as the digital photo may fail system checks. DS‑160 mistakes often lead to additional questions and increase refusal risk. Other supporting documents are optional, and the list depends on the travel purpose and individual circumstances. For example, prepare a U.S. partner invitation for a business trip, a letter from relatives or friends for a visit, or an approximate itinerary for tourism. Logical, clear information makes it easier for the officer to understand the case.

Consistent Answers at the Astana Interview

Any inaccuracies can make an officer doubt whether the information is truthful, often leading to refusal. Your interview answers must confirm everything stated in the application: employment, income, education, family status, travel purpose and contacts in the United States. If significant changes occur after completing the DS‑160, such as changing jobs, complete a new form. This demonstrates that you take the visa procedure seriously and respect embassy rules. Any inconsistency between the application and interview answers may be grounds for refusal.

No Legal or Immigration Violations

Minor administrative offences generally do not affect B1/B2 decisions. The important point is not to conceal information in the application or interview: answer honestly and provide all necessary details. More serious legal problems can lead to refusal, such as links to extremist organisations, serious criminal convictions or other security threats. In such cases, a U.S. visa cannot be obtained. Violations of immigration law in the United States or elsewhere also matter. False documents, unauthorised employment or overstaying substantially reduce approval chances. In some cases, a temporary or permanent entry ban is imposed.

Avoid Political Statements

Be careful with your interview remarks: avoid sensitive topics, statements, criticism of governments, political conditions and military conflicts. The interview concerns only the U.S. trip and related factors. Starting a political discussion will at least raise concern. Remember that consular staff also check the social media accounts listed in the DS‑160. Ensure your pages contain no inflammatory statements, appeals or comments. In 2026, these may be interpreted as a threat to U.S. national security, leading to immediate visa refusal.

Conduct at the U.S. Embassy Interview in Astana

During the interview, remain calm, polite and friendly. Do not argue, impose your opinion, interrupt the officer or try to persuade them. Be confident and open, without excessive emotion or anxiety. The Embassy has no strict dress code, but neat business-style clothing is recommended. Nothing should distract you from the conversation. In 2026, a nonimmigrant visa interview lasts only a few minutes, so making a positive impression immediately is very important.

Assessing Your Chances of Obtaining a U.S. Visa in Kazakhstan

Our company professionally handles applications for various U.S. visa types. For many years, we have helped applicants obtain U.S. visas quickly and easily. Our experience covers a wide range of situations, from standard tourist trips to highly complex embassy applications following multiple refusals, deportations, visa cancellations, immigration violations and more. Extensive practical experience, together with detailed client feedback, gives us a clear understanding of how the U.S. Embassy assesses applicants, documents, forms and circumstances as a whole.

Our visa department is also led by a particularly experienced colleague who spent several years working in the consular section of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and studied the system from the inside. He knows exactly what matters for U.S. visa approval in different situations. We therefore base our work on the actual factors used by U.S. Embassy officers to make visa decisions, rather than generic criteria. Using these factors, we developed a dedicated online test to assess the chances of obtaining a U.S. visa in Kazakhstan in 2026.

The test contains 25 questions grouped by topic. They cover key aspects of every applicant’s circumstances: purpose of travel to the United States, finances, employment in the country of residence, family and children, previous international travel and earlier U.S. visa applications. Completing the online test takes no more than 2-3 minutes. It offers an accessible, understandable way to review your circumstances as a whole and assess the risk of a U.S. visa refusal under Section 214(b) in advance. It is particularly useful for first-time applicants and those applying after a refusal.

Obtaining a U.S. visa has become more difficult, primarily because interviews must take place abroad. Application expenses have increased significantly. It is therefore important to assess risks and understand your chances of approval through the U.S. Embassy in Astana in advance, to avoid losing time and money. Our comprehensive service provides personal support at every stage. We examine your case in detail and propose an effective U.S. visa application strategy. If you have not yet decided whether to apply with us or independently, try the online test. It will help you understand your prospects, the risk of refusal and whether particular aspects need further work.

U.S. Visa Interview at the U.S. Embassy in Astana

Kazakhstan has a U.S. Embassy in Astana and a U.S. Consulate in Almaty. Before September 2025, Russians could apply at both U.S. missions. Since 6 September, however, Russian citizens have had only one option. Under the new Department of State rules, applicants from Russia may attend interviews only at the U.S. Embassy in Astana. Both nonimmigrant and immigrant visa interviews are conducted there. Almaty has suspended appointments for Russians and can no longer be used to apply for a U.S. visa.

Russian citizens must book in Astana as nonresidents unless they live permanently in Kazakhstan. Residents and nonresidents have separate appointment schedules, so selecting the correct category is important. Interviews usually take place on weekday mornings. Only people with appointments are admitted to the U.S. Embassy in Astana. If an applicant needs assistance during the interview, permission for an accompanying person must be arranged in advance. Third parties are not admitted without official written confirmation from the consular section.

Important Points for a U.S. Visa Interview in Astana

  • giving excessively long or irrelevant answers;
  • adding unnecessary details the officer has not asked about;
  • answering uncertainly or contradicting yourself;
  • using standard phrases memorised in advance;
  • arguing with the officer or trying to change their mind;
  • showing irritation, tiredness or indifference;
  • answering too emotionally or joking at an inappropriate moment;
  • interrupting the officer before they finish the question;
  • starting to justify yourself or offering unnecessary explanations.

An interview with an officer usually lasts no more than 5-10 minutes, sometimes less, while the entire embassy visit takes approximately 1.5 hours. Bring your international passport, registration confirmations and supporting documents. English translations are not required: letters, statements and certificates may be provided in Russian. According to our clients’ feedback, U.S. visa interviews in Astana in 2026 take place calmly and normally. There are no widespread unfair refusals or prejudice against Russians. Officers make decisions based on the overall picture, carefully reviewing and comparing documents, the DS‑160 and the applicant’s interview answers. The political situation is not discussed.

When completing the DS‑160, avoid mistakes and typing errors, ensure all information matches your supporting documents, and keep everything logical and clear. There should be no inaccuracies or inconsistencies. Save your application and reread it before the interview: check what you entered, whether it is correct and whether anything has changed. If your employment, address, marital status or travel purpose has changed, it is better to create a new DS‑160. You must then enter the new application number in your account and print an appointment confirmation with the current details. The DS‑160 number must match the number in the appointment booking. Be sure to compare them.

During interviews at the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan, Russian citizens are usually asked about two main topics. The first is the trip to the United States: where you are going, why, what you intend to do, where you will stay and when you will return home. Officers do not ask to see flight or hotel reservations, but you need to describe your forthcoming trip verbally and show that you have an itinerary and know where you are going and for how long. The second topic is your main occupation in Russia. Applicants are asked about their employer, length of service, professional responsibilities and plans, and income. It is important to demonstrate stability and an established life to which you will definitely return from the United States.

Questions may also concern family, children, education, previous employment and relatives living in the United States. The exact questions depend on each applicant’s circumstances. Sometimes an officer needs to clarify only one or two points, while other interviews involve more detailed questioning. Applicants may sometimes feel that an officer is asking illogical questions, repeating them or clarifying the same information several times. This is not a mistake: officers observe the applicant’s reactions and behaviour. Avoid raising suspicions and make the right impression. Be confident, friendly and calm. Answer consistently, without becoming confused or contradicting yourself.

How to Make a Poor Impression at a U.S. Visa Interview in Astana

  • giving excessively long or irrelevant answers;
  • adding unnecessary details the officer has not asked about;
  • answering uncertainly or contradicting yourself;
  • using standard phrases memorised in advance;
  • arguing with the officer or trying to change their mind;
  • showing irritation, tiredness or indifference;
  • answering too emotionally or joking at an inappropriate moment;
  • interrupting the officer before they finish the question;
  • starting to justify yourself or offering unnecessary explanations.

  • if your income sources or financial documents need to be explained correctly to the Embassy;
  • if you have relatives in the United States who are applying for a Green Card or U.S. citizenship and are unsure how to describe this in the application and at the interview;
  • if you want to know in advance which interview questions may arise and how to answer them;
  • if you need your case to be logical and convincing, without contradictions or weaknesses.

Before the interview, you receive detailed guidance covering every step of visiting the U.S. Embassy in Astana so you can feel confident. We explain which questions may be asked and how to answer them appropriately, what you may bring, what to wear and how to conduct yourself. Experience shows that proper interview preparation improves the chances of approval.

Our services are paid for only when a U.S. visa is obtained. This principle has remained unchanged for fifteen years, since 2010. It is a firm and honest company rule: we work for results. Previously, when interviews could be attended in Russia, clients collected their passports with issued visas from our office and paid at that point. Now, when applying in Astana, the passport is returned directly to the applicant. We therefore collect payment at the beginning, but refund it if the visa is refused. This condition is clearly stated in the agreement signed with every client. There is no financial risk to you, and everything is transparent.

U.S. Visa via Kazakhstan under Stricter Rules for Russian Citizens

Obtaining a U.S. tourist visa under a stricter U.S. visa policy, with detailed document preparation and thorough interview coaching based on current B1/B2 applicant requirements.
Interview location: U.S. Embassy in Astana (Kazakhstan)
Виза в США через Астану от 08.01.2026 - пример, отзыв и кейс

A client contacted us about obtaining a U.S. nonimmigrant visa in December 2025, during a period many applicants consider one of the most difficult in recent years because of new U.S. Department of State restrictions. The client is a Russian citizen who had travelled abroad but had never visited the United States. The main purpose of the trip was tourism, visiting several cities on a carefully planned itinerary.

The main difficulty was the overall U.S. visa situation at the time of the enquiry: increasing refusals, closer scrutiny of Russian applicants, a limited choice of countries for applying, and frequent changes to application processing procedures. The absence of previous U.S. or Five Eyes country visas and the need to apply outside the country of residence added further complexity.

The client had started researching independently and encountered conflicting information, ranging from claims of 'mass refusals' to advice to conceal the real purpose of travel or misrepresent information in the form. This created serious doubts and concern about making a mistake that could cause a refusal with long-term consequences. The client's main goal was to obtain a visa legally, without jeopardising future travel or immigration prospects, through a clearly structured case and professional interview preparation.

Reapplying for a U.S. Visa in Astana after a Section 214(b) Refusal

Reapplying for a U.S. visa after a refusal, with a complete review of the application and travel plan and thorough interview preparation addressing the reasons for the previous refusal.
Interview location: U.S. Embassy in Astana (Kazakhstan)
Виза в США B1/B2 через Казахстан от 12.12.2025 - пример и отзыв

A client contacted us after a U.S. nonimmigrant visa refusal under Section 214(b). The refusal had occurred less than a year earlier following an independent application. The client is a sole proprietor with a small business, travels regularly and holds European and Asian visas, but the initial U.S. visa application had been poorly structured. The main problem was an insufficiently developed travel plan and interview answers that did not match the information in the application.

After the refusal, the client experienced a situation common in such cases: considerable anxiety, fear of another refusal and uncertainty about whether to reapply at all. Myths surrounding repeat applications added stress, from claims of a 'guaranteed second refusal' to advice to change the travel purpose and visa type or misrepresent information in the form.

The client understood that another refusal could harm not only tourism plans but also potential business trips and future visas for other Five Eyes countries: Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The key task was not simply to apply again, but to fundamentally change the visa officer's perception of the case, correct previous mistakes and develop a new, transparent and persuasive application strategy.

U.S. Visa via Kazakhstan with a Complex Income and Employment Structure

Obtaining a U.S. tourist visa with a complex income structure, through careful preparation of the DS‑160, supporting documents and possible financial questions at the interview.
Interview location: U.S. Embassy in Astana (Kazakhstan)
Виза в США B1/B2 через Астану от 08.12.2025 - пример и отзыв

An applicant contacted us about obtaining a U.S. nonimmigrant visa through the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan. The client is a Russian citizen who travels extensively and had held European and Asian visas but no previous U.S. visa. The purpose was tourism, visiting several cities in different states on a pre-planned itinerary.

The main challenge was how to present employment and income in the DS‑160. The client's income came from several sources: project work, remote work and occasional payments from foreign clients, while the form allows only one primary employer to be listed. The client was understandably concerned about identifying and stating the principal occupation correctly, deciding which employment to include and answering the visa officer's questions about work and sources of income clearly and consistently.

Applying through Kazakhstan, which has seen a shift in applicant traffic in recent years, was another risk factor. This has increased competition for visa slots and led to a more formalised, sometimes superficial, approach to reviewing applications. The client feared their financial circumstances might appear unstable or insufficiently transparent, causing a refusal and harming their visa history. The main task was to present the actual financial picture accurately and consistently, without distortion or omissions.

Common Reasons for U.S. Visa Refusal in Astana

When a B1/B2 visa application through Kazakhstan is refused, applicants receive a standard notice citing the relevant law. This is most often Section 214(b) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act. It states that a visa must be refused if the applicant does not convince the Embassy of strong ties to the country of residence or demonstrate that the requirements are met. This means that every U.S. visa applicant in Astana is viewed as a potential immigrant. If the applicant does not convince the officer that they will definitely return home rather than remain in the United States, the visa is refused. No specific explanation is provided; the wording is the same for everyone.

Applicants must demonstrate ties to their country of residence, such as employment, a stable income, family or property. Without any ties, obtaining a U.S. visa through Kazakhstan is virtually impossible. The applicant will be suspected of potential immigration and refused under Section 214(b). Although this is not a permanent ban on obtaining a visa and a new application may be submitted at any time, the outcome will remain the same unless circumstances change.

It is therefore important to analyse the refusal and identify the real reason, which differs for every applicant. Extensive experience, handling U.S. visas of different categories and complexity, and genuine client feedback have helped us compile the most common reasons for refusal. Read more in the Common Reasons for U.S. Visa Refusal section. Below, we provide current information on B1/B2 applications in Astana and the reasons Russians were refused in 2025.

Weak Ties to Russia as a Reason for Refusal

This is the most common reason for U.S. visa refusal. If nothing keeps the applicant at home and there are no strong ties to the country of residence, the officer may suspect immigration intent and apply the presumption under Section 214(b). Higher-risk applicants include young people, final-year students, recent graduates and young residents of smaller towns. They often lack stable employment or property, are unmarried, have no children and still depend on parents. The U.S. Embassy in Astana considers it easier for such applicants to remain abroad. In 2026, young applicants face even closer scrutiny because of economic and political instability. Applicants without strong ties should therefore prepare supporting evidence and convincing explanations in advance to demonstrate that they will return home. Otherwise, refusal under Section 214(b) may follow.

Inaccuracies and Inconsistencies in the DS‑160 and Interview

At the interview, the officer assesses everything: answers, behaviour and reactions. Anxiety, confused responses and inaccurate information inevitably raise suspicions. The information in the DS‑160 must not contradict what the applicant says at the U.S. Embassy interview, including travel dates, purposes and U.S. contacts. Any discrepancy may lead to refusal: if something is unclear, the officer may refuse rather than risk overlooking a violation. The DS‑160 must also contain correct employment and education information, without typing errors, misspelled proper names or contradictions with earlier visa applications. Incomplete information leads to questions and sometimes refusal. The solution is to complete the form carefully, remain calm at the interview and answer clearly and to the point.

An Excessively Long Planned Stay in the United States

Some applicants plan to spend several months in the United States, travelling or visiting family. This is not prohibited: Russians are generally allowed to stay up to six months per entry on a B1/B2 visa. However, obtaining the visa may be difficult. Officers in Astana may refuse an applicant proposing more than a month without convincing justification. This raises doubts about ties to Russia: how can the applicant leave work, studies or family for so long, and do these really keep them at home? Concealing the intended length and later staying for an extended period can also cause a future refusal because the officer loses trust. This creates a difficult situation. We recommend being truthful and preparing for detailed questions, with convincing explanations of why a long trip is needed and why you will definitely return home.

Previous Extended Visits to the United States

If you previously spent 4-5 months in the United States, you may face difficulties renewing your visa. Russian citizens may make extended visits of up to six months, but in practice this is not encouraged, particularly if the application stated a holiday of only a few weeks. Such discrepancies immediately increase refusal risk. This often affects pensioners visiting children or grandchildren: they effectively live in the United States for up to half a year, return to Russia and soon leave again. A new visa may be difficult to obtain because the officer may conclude that nothing keeps them at home. If this applies to you, carefully consider how to explain the extended visits and prepare convincing evidence of ties to Russia and the temporary nature of your U.S. stays.

Limited Visa History and No International Travel

Travel to countries with demanding visa requirements, including Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, Canada and Australia, is a major advantage when applying through Kazakhstan. It demonstrates reliability: the applicant returns home rather than staying elsewhere, suggesting they will leave the United States on time too. Conversely, a blank passport or only visa-free travel may concern the officer. Why the United States, why now, and why no earlier international travel? Such questions will arise at the interview. Unfortunately, experience shows that the U.S. Embassy in Astana refused many applicants with blank passports in 2025, especially when other factors were also weak.

Relatives in the United States

Having family in the United States is not itself a reason for refusal, but it may complicate the application. Such applicants receive closer scrutiny because they have contacts and potential support for staying in America rather than returning home. The Embassy checks how relatives moved to the United States and obtained their status. If they changed status or applied for political asylum, the applicant may face greater difficulty, as officers may suspect the same intentions. Refusal is not inevitable, but prepare for detailed questions about relatives' status, how they moved and what they do. Any doubt about your reliability may lead to refusal under Section 214(b).

Insufficient Financial Resources

A bank balance certificate is not required for a B1/B2 tourist visa. Nevertheless, officers in Astana assess financial stability indirectly, asking about income, the ability to fund the trip, financial independence and stability in Russia. According to applicant feedback, in 2026 officers in Kazakhstan ask B1/B2 applicants about salaries and personal savings. A sponsor may pay for the trip, but it should be someone close, not an unrelated person, and the arrangement must be logical and clear. Otherwise, doubts about financial means may lead to refusal. The officer may conclude that low income and difficult circumstances in Russia would prompt the applicant to seek unauthorised employment or another way to remain in the United States.

An Unconvincing or Suspicious Travel Purpose

At the interview, clearly explain why you are travelling to the United States, what you plan to do, whom you will meet and what you will visit. Your plan must be specific and consistent with B1/B2. Confused answers, unclear explanations or suspicious invitations may cause problems, for example an invitation from someone you barely know or a distant relative, an overly formal invitation with generic wording and no specifics, or an invitation from a person blacklisted by the Embassy. In such cases, visas are refused under Section 214(b), and a fraud note may sometimes be added to the case. Another difficult situation is visiting an opposite-sex friend after online correspondence. Online relationships raise consular concerns, and such applicants are almost always refused because officers suspect an intended permanent move disguised as tourism.

Collecting Your Passport After U.S. Visa Approval

The U.S. visa decision is announced at the interview. If the visa is refused, the passport is returned to the applicant. If administrative processing under Section 221(g) is required, the passport should also be collected immediately. If the visa is approved, the international passport remains at the Embassy for a few days, normally 2-3 working days, for visa issuance. The documents are then transferred to the Visametric courier service, whose office handles collection of passports with U.S. visas in Astana. Please note that the U.S. Embassy in Astana issues visas relatively quickly and does not hold passports unnecessarily. Applicants interviewed on Monday or Tuesday usually receive their passports by the end of the week.

No appointment is needed to collect a passport with a U.S. visa. Applicants simply visit the Visametric office in Astana (Avenue Saryarka 6, Arman Business Centre, Office 1140) during opening hours, Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:30. No payment is required: delivery to the courier office is included in the visa application fee. Either the applicant or a representative, including any third party, may collect the passport. Russian citizens applying through Kazakhstan may choose a convenient Visametric office in either Astana or Almaty. The desired office must be selected in the online profile in advance when booking the interview.

To collect a passport from Visametric, bring an identity document, such as a Russian domestic passport. A representative must bring their own original passport, a copy of the applicant’s passport and a freely worded authorisation letter (download a sample). Parents or legal representatives may collect passports for children under 16 with the original and a copy of the birth certificate. One person may also collect passports for a group or family. A single authorisation letter may cover all applicants, provided it lists them and bears their signatures. Before visiting Visametric, we recommend preparing the DS‑160 confirmation and the U.S. visa interview appointment confirmation. Bringing these documents is not mandatory but can simplify and speed up collection.

Another important detail: if a passport with a U.S. visa is not collected within 30 calendar days of becoming available at the courier office, it is returned to the U.S. Embassy in Astana. A special request to the Embassy will then be required to retrieve it, so collecting on time is preferable. Alternatively, you can arrange delivery of your passport with the U.S. visa from Kazakhstan to Russia after your interview in Astana.

This is a special and very convenient service for Russian citizens: passport delivery to Russia following a U.S. Embassy interview in Astana. You do not need to wait in Kazakhstan while the visa is issued. You can return home immediately, and the courier will deliver your passport to the specified Russian address, at home or work. Premium delivery can be ordered only after the interview and visa approval. Email usvisadocumentskz@visametric.com with the subject «Premium Delivery Service for (passport number)». You will receive detailed instructions and a payment link. Delivery costs 55,000 tenge per passport. Once payment is made and the documents are ready, you will receive a tracking number for your passport with the U.S. visa.

When registering an account to book at the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan, applicants select the address where they will collect their passport with the visa after the interview. Once the interview is booked, this address appears on the appointment confirmation. The passport with the visa will be delivered within 2-3 working days of the interview. Most applicants choose collection from a Visametric office because passports are delivered there most quickly. Remember that collection requires several documents, listed in the screenshot above. Contact our company for assistance with your U.S. visa application through Kazakhstan to avoid delays collecting your passport with the issued visa. With us, you can be confident that all your documents will be prepared correctly.

      Hello. I have booked a U.S. visa interview in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and I am a Russian citizen. How many days might I have to wait for my passport if the consular officer approves the visa? I selected collection from the VFS Global office and will pick it up myself. I would like to know when to book my return ticket. Thank you.

        Hello, Ksenia! When choosing an interview date, first check the holidays and nonworking days of that U.S. diplomatic mission. Please remember that the consular section processes and prints visas in passports only on working days. Knowing the schedule will help you plan your trip.

        After an interview in Kazakhstan, passports are returned fairly quickly, sometimes as soon as the following day. However, it is safer to allow two to three working days, excluding the interview day. You should receive your passport within that period and be able to return home.

      Hello! Can Russian citizens book interviews in Kazakhstan? There was a period when Russians were not allowed to do so.

        Hello, Irina! First, there has never been an official ban on Russian citizens applying for U.S. visas in Kazakhstan. However, when applicant numbers are very high, the interview calendar may be closed because there are no available appointments, or so few are released that they are immediately taken.

        This is why applicants from Russia sometimes cannot schedule an interview in Kazakhstan. We invite everyone to monitor appointment availability on our website, where the information is updated every morning. This lets you see which countries currently have interview slots and helps you plan your application.

      Hello. My husband and I are applying through Almaty. I am a Russian citizen and he is a citizen of Kazakhstan. I do not have a Kazakh residence permit. We therefore completed separate applications as instructed, and the earliest available appointment for me as a nonresident is in January, while he can get one from late October. We plan to travel to a competition in late November. What should we do? As his wife, can I attend the interview with him despite having a different citizenship?

        Hello, Katerina! When applying for a U.S. visa abroad, you must follow the rules of the particular Embassy. Kazakhstan strictly separates residents and nonresidents, so you cannot use a workaround to book an interview: the consular section will cancel it, or you may simply be denied entry on the appointment day.

        The only option is to request permission to attend with your husband, who is a resident of Kazakhstan, during the period available to him. Submit a request through the relevant form in your account and explain your reasons in detail. Unfortunately, the chances of approval are not high, but it is still worth trying.

      Hello! If I book an interview in Almaty and then see earlier dates in Nur-Sultan, can I reschedule there? Or is the payment tied to a particular consular location? Thank you in advance!

        Tomas

        Hello, Dinara! Under the immigration rules in 2026, a paid U.S. visa fee can be used for an application within the same country. This means the payment is valid at all U.S. diplomatic missions in that country.

        However, you can use the rescheduling option to change your interview date only at the Embassy or Consulate already selected. If you want to change the application city, you must cancel the existing appointment, change the location in your profile and then book a date at the desired mission.

        Do not forget to prepare a new DS‑160 form selecting the city that matches your current appointment. This is important because a form created for a different Embassy or Consulate may not be found on the interview day, and you would have to start again.

      Kamilla

      Hello! Your article says that Russian citizens attending an interview in Kazakhstan need English translations of all documents, such as employment and bank letters. However, your answers to questions say these documents do not need to be translated. Could you clarify which is correct? Also, if I have already paid the visa fee in Russia, will that payment be lost if I attend an interview in Kazakhstan? How do I pay a new fee for an interview there? Do I need a new account and a new application form, or can I keep the same account and just complete a new form?

      • Avatar
        Tomas

        Hello, Kamilla! A visa fee paid for an application in Russia is valid only there. The same principle applies to all countries: you pay the fee to apply in a particular country and cannot use it elsewhere.

        The visa fee is nonrefundable as a matter of official U.S. immigration policy. However, we try to help applicants recover their funds if they have not yet entered the receipt details in their online account, and only in that situation.

        To apply at a U.S. diplomatic mission in Kazakhstan, you will need to pay the visa fee again. The process there has its own requirements, including registering a new profile on the relevant website.

        You pay the fee and then book the interview through that website. Remember to complete a new DS‑160 form selecting the city where you will actually attend. As the interview will be conducted in Russian, you do not need to translate any documents.
